Luang Prabang Highlights - 5 days

Welcome to Luang Prabang, Laos. On your arrival, your guide and driver will greet you at the airport for transfer to your hotel where you’ll have time to refresh yourself.

Later on, climb the steps up Mount Phousi, which dominates the town skyline and offers panoramic views over this quaint town, the former royal capital of Laos now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Back at the foot of the mountain, stroll the picturesque streets of the charming old town and browse the night market, packed with aromatic street food, brilliant hand-crafted textiles from the region’s hill tribes, and friendly banter among the vendors.

Wind down your day with an exceptional dinner at Son Phao Restaurant where, apart from excellent food, you can enjoy a traditional Lao dance show.

This morning, see some of Luang Prabang’s most important temples, including Wat Visoun, home of the ‘Watermelon Stupa’, and Wat Xieng Thong known for its expansive Tree of Life mural depicting the Buddhist story. Join a Hmong Batik Class and create a wax resist, Hmong style design on hand-loomed hemp. Due to time constraints, we cannot complete the dyeing process, but the natural hemp offers a beautiful product. Later, stroll the quaint streets and join in a game of petanque – someone is always willing to show you how to play, and it is a fun way to get to know the local people. Close out your day at Garavek show. In this English language stage show, the traditional storytelling art of garavek is the medium, while the theme is Luang Prabang itself. In a mixture of history and popular myth, hear the story of this town to the accompaniment of the khene, a handmade bamboo mouth organ, and the quintessential Lao folk instrument.

Note:

Option: Get into the local spirit, rising at dawn to join lines of people silently offering food to Buddhist monks walking back from morning prayers. After participating in this daily ritual of alms-giving, stroll through the vibrant morning market.

Step aboard a boat on the mighty Mekong River and head upstream to visit the Pak Ou Caves. Inside the two chambers of this well-known pilgrimage site, you will see an incredible number and variety of Buddha images. On your journey along the river, take in splendid natural scenery and absorb the pace of life among the local fishermen and riverside communities. On your return journey, dock at Ban Xang Khong Village and learn about the local methods of making Saa paper and hand woven products.

Spend this morning learning about traditional cuisine in a Lao cooking class. Begin with a tour of local markets where you’ll see, touch, smell and taste the ingredients for typical Lao food, then prepare and cook a Lao meal with your chef’s instruction, and enjoy a delectable lunch of your own preparation. In the afternoon, drive out of Luang Prabang to visit Khuang Si Waterfall. Located in a lushly forested area, this tiered waterfalls has numerous pools idea for a cooling swim, and even simply sitting by the water’s edge is a refreshing experience.
