Myanmar Off the Beaten Tracks - 12 days

This 12-day tour takes in not only the two absolute icons of Myanmar: Yangon and Bagan but also the authentic and unvarnished site of the country, with a side trip to the wonderfully slow paced Ngapali Beach on the west coast.

Starting in Yangon, you will visit the iconic Shwedagon Pagoda, regarded by many as being as important as the Taj Mahal. It is an awe inspiring, 99 meter tall, gold covered, work of art that should be seen by everyone at some stage. You spend time at Bagan, with its incredible temples and pagodas and the sunrises and sunsets are world renowned.

You also have a chance to explore the unknown Mrauk U, a remote historical site, smaller than Bagan but incomparable. In the beautiful hilly landscape of the Rakhine state hundreds of ancient temples and pagodas, many of which are well preserved remain of the powerful empire that once flourished here.

Finish the tour at Ngapali Beach, where you can relax, taste seafood on the beach and do some shopping for gifts and souvenirs. This is one of the best tours available to see the beyond of Myanmar!

day 1
ARRIVAL YANGON

Mingalaba! Welcome to Myanmar. You will be met at the Yangon International Airport and transferred to your hotel.
The journey begins with an afternoon tour through the colonial-style city center of Yangon & most iconic temples: the Chauk That Gyi pagoda and its magnificent reclining Buddha relics, located nearby Yangon River.

When night falls, you enjoy the sunset at Shwedagon Pagoda, a gleaming bell dome structure that dominates the city’s skyline. Legends state that the sacred hairs of the Buddha are enshrined here.

day 2
YANGON - BAGAN

After breakfast, you will head to the airport for a flight to Bagan, the first and most beautiful capital of the Burmese, founded in the eleventh century.

Your journey will start at Shwezigon Pagoda, a prototype of the Burma style of stupas. In the afternoon, you will visit Ananda Temple, a masterpiece of Mon architecture with four standing Buddha statues, and an adjacent brick monastery with well-preserved murals. Your next destination is Thatbyinnyu Temple, the tallest building in the complex, measuring 61m and Dhammayangyi Temple, the largest of all of Bagan. Here, let’s climb up one of the monuments to enjoy sunset above Bagan plain and Ayeyarwady River.

For your crafty knowledge, take an en route to visit the traditional manufacture of unique Bagan lacquer ware and watch a local artist doing sand painting.

day 3
BAGAN – MT. POPA

After breakfast, you can take a walk through the marketplace of Nyaung U, and get a glimpse into the Burmese people’s life, prepare some small changes for local snacks and products if you may want to try.

Later, you will join a leisurely drive through a sun-parched plain to the Mountain of Deities (Mt.Popa), where you can climb the huge volcanic rock on a staircase to see shrines for nats (celestial spirits of Burmese mythology) and small temples for Lord Buddha. It will take about 20 minutes to reach the top of Mount Popa (Sanscrit word for flower) as you will pass by many small food stalls and drugstores selling herbal medicine on the way.

After come back to your Hotel,  you will head back to Bagan temples site by horse cart and watch the magnificent sunset over Bagan.

Since we care about the animal and understand you may feel upset for riding the horse cart, so feel free to discuss with us to switch to normal transfer by car, bicycle or e-bike.

day 4
BAGAN - YANGON

Today you will be free at leisure in Bagan.

You can explore the temple area on an e-bike tour or possibly take an optional hot air balloon ride in the morning.

Imagine floating over thousand year old pagodas and the mighty Ayeyarwaddy River, as the sun rises over misty fields and temples. The magic of Bagan has inspired visitors to Myanmar for centuries. You experience one of the most remarkable sights in Asia, where ancient temples dot the landscape as far as the eye can see. The flight is approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on wind, air currents and other factors. You are picked up from the hotel and transferred to the launch site. After a briefing session, you will set off on a spectacular flight. Upon landing enjoy a glass of champagne and a light snack prior transfer back to your hotel.

day 5
YANGON – SITTWE - MRAUK U

After breakfast, you will transfer to Yangon Airport for a morning flight to Sttwe, a former seaside capital of colonial Burma where the Rivers Kaledan and Lemro meet the Bay of Bengal.

On arrival at Sittwe airport, you will head to the jetty for a private boat trip along the Kaladan River to Mrauk-U about 4 to 7 hours upstream, enjoying river life.

You will check-in at the hotel and stay overnight in Mrauk U.

day 6
MRAUK U SIGHTSEEING

After breakfast, you will start your sight-seeing day in Mrauk U, the ancient capital city of Rakhine Kingdom (15th century).

Then, you will stop by the city market, Pharaouk Pagoda, Mong-Khong-Shwe Du Stupa, Pest Paya, Koe Thaung Temple (a shrine of 90,000 Buddha images), Latt-Say Lake (an artificial lake with a city wall and gate) and Sandamuni Monastery.

You will return to the hotel for lunch. In the afternoon, your journey will continue with a visit to the massive Chit-Thaung Temple, a curiously remarkable temple with 80,000 Buddha images and reliefs, Htaukkha-Thein Temple likes the fortress, Andaw temple, Ratanabon Stupa, Laymyathanar Temple, Laungbanprauk Pagoda and Pikataik (a small library).

From here, you will drive to Harritaung hill for sunset watching and come back to the hotel.

day 7
MRAUK U SIGHTSEEING

After breakfast, you will visit Wethali (Vesali) – a kingdom founded in the 4th century that prospered for some 400 years to see the Great Image of Su Taun Prai, a 5-meter sitting Buddha in Rakhine-style, which is said to have been carved out of one piece of rock.

From Wethali, you will continue your journey towards Kyauktaw and visit Mahamuni Pagoda. Nowadays, three stone images sit on the pedestal that was once home to the Mahamuni Buddha. 

After returning to Mrauk-U in the afternoon, you will head to the museum which houses ancient stone slabs with inscriptions and a collection of Rakhine-style Buddha images. A stroll through the streets of Mrauk-U, nestled amongst hills may light up your later day as you go to Shwetaung.

day 8
MRAUK U - SITTWE

After breakfast at the hotel, you will visit some ancient pagodas, including Sakyamanaung, Ratanamanaung, Minglamanaung pagodas and the Nann-Oo Buddha image.

Then, let’s head back to the hotel for check-out as you will transfer to the jetty for a boat back to Sittwe.

You will enjoy lunch onboard with the stunning river views. On arrival to Sittwe, you will head to your hotel and stay overnight in Sittwe.

day 9
SITTWE – YANGON - NGAPALI

After breakfast, you will visit the fish market of Sittwe, Payagyi Temple with a golden faced Buddha image, Mahakuthala Monastery, and other site of the city.

Later on, you will transfer to the airport reaching Yangon, followed by an afternoon flight to Thandwe (8 km from Ngapali Beach).

Upon arrival, you will come to your hotel and stay overnight in Ngapali.

day 10-11
NGAPALI BEACH

These days are free at leisure to enjoy the pristine beaches of Ngapali and relaxing in the shade of palm trees by the sea for the rest of your day.

You can either visit the colorful local market in Thandwe (Sandoway), bike along the coast to surrounding villages, or hire a boat to go fishing/ sailing.

NGAPALI BEACH – YANGON - DEPARTURE

You may enjoy breakfast at your hotel. Afterwards, you are free at leisure.

Then, let’s head to Thandwe Airport for your flight to Yangon.
