Hanoi is a city in transition between the old and the contemporary. Everywhere, there are reminders of its ancient past and traditions, including the French colonial era and this contrasts with the modern buildings and infrastructure necessary to function in today’s modern world. Hanoi is in a constant state of flux and defies anyone who tries to box it in! At its heart is the chaotic Old Quarter, where narrow streets are roughly arranged by trade. There are many little temples, plus the Dong Xuan market, selling household goods and street food.
