Craft Beer Tasting in Hanoi & Saigon – Vietnam

In Vietnam, one doesn’t have to walk far to stumble across one of the popular, raucous bia hois – establishments where locals knock back fresh, frothy draft beer. So, it comes as no surprise that craft beer has made its way into the country with a pop and a fizz.

The Sens Asia team wandered over to Pasteur Street Brewing Company in Hanoi (it also has a base in Saigon) for a taste of some of its beers, which fuse American craft brewing techniques with Vietnamese ingredients. The beers aren’t for everyone (milkshake-flavored IPA, anyone?) but there are some very interesting and more appealing flavor combinations to tickle the taste buds.

We tried the Passion Fruit Wheat Ale, the Dragon Fruit Gose, the Milkshake IPA (yes, we gave it a go), the Jasmine IPA, the Cyclo Imperial IPA, the Chocolate Stout, the Coffee Porter and a few others. Faces puckered, noses scrunched, mouths widened and eyes glazed over as we sampled our varied selection of brews, with the Passion Fruit Wheat Ale coming out on top.

The brewery is the perfect place for beer enthusiasts who love the taste of hops and the flavors of Vietnam and want to see these two worlds collide. It’s also a nice activity to schedule after a long day exploring the city, when the light is beginning to fade. After quenching their first, visitors to the brewery only need to take a short stroll before ending up at the stunning St Joseph’s Cathedral. Or, they can walk a little further to take in the beauty of Hoan Kiem Lake in the evening.
