“I love to see the satisfaction on someone’s face when they take their first sip of our coffee in the morning, when I see them forging new friendships and existing ones, when they taste the love of our process. Unknowingly to them I am enjoying the same cup and it also makes my senses come alive” Mr. Phi Bay, founder of Nam Long coffee shared with Sens Asia Travel.
My friends always ask me what I want my vision is for Nam Long coffee, my spiritual son. It is a question I have thought about a lot lately.
I used to be a journalist for one of the most famous magazines in Vietnam. It gave me an opportunity to travel to many rural areas, especially coffee planting areas where I had a chance to meet the farmers. Whilst listening to their stories it dawned upon me that most of them have an uncertain life. Their farms were unproductive due to the methods they used, this led to a lower quality bean and subsequently lower prices at the market. I felt a real desire to help them. That’s how Nam Long Coffee started.
There were many challenges on the way like convincing the farmers to pick and produce mature coffee cherries only. I firmly believed that the initial processing process combined with picking the cherries when they reach a perfect level of maturity were critical in producing great coffee. I don’t think people realize just how love, care and attention goes into bringing them that perfect cup of coffee in the morning. This process is what makes that perfect cup, that first sip when you know this is a good coffee.
By adapting my philosophy it presented the farmers with an opportunity to sell their beans at higher prices at the market. As our reputation grew so did their earnings. The whole process is interlinked forming an inseparable chain. From the way we choose our beans, to how we care for our plants, pick them at the right maturity through to our roasting and delivery. If one of these components broke down it simply means that the beans could not pass our quality control. I am very proud of Nam Long Coffee and our partnership in the value chain to bring only the very best coffee to our customers.
So what is my vision for Nam Long Coffee?
I want to produce the best coffee in Vietnam and I want Nam Long Coffee to be an equal partner for our farmers, one they can trust in, one that will help them grow and prosper as we grow and prosper. Most of all I get satisfaction when I silently sit in a coffee shop and see the satisfaction on someone’s face when they take their first sip of our coffee in the morning, when I see them forging new friendships and existing ones, when I see them taste the love of our process. Unknowingly to them I am enjoying the same cup and it also makes me senses come alive.
